I used 200 year old pine for the body and 200 year old pine and crelicam ebony for the fingerboard for the neck. “A Guitar Story

Preface: I come from a large extended family.

I have 6 paternal uncles and about the same number on my mom’s side.

Each uncle has a title, and a number relative to their age order.

Our last name “Ng” translates to the number 5 with the house strokes added to acknowledge that it’s a surname.

My dad (#3 of 7) was the only Ng brother with kids for a long time.

Because of that my siblings and I became the adopted kids of my eldest uncle.

My uncle was a cultured man, among other things.

He was a New York City kendo club member, had a tatami room built in his home, and a lover of books and tea.

He had a palette for the finer things in life but never forgot that he was a poor kid from Hong Kong.

He taught me how to eat well and drink popularly.

This is a story about Divine Serendipity…

It all started with Blake from the Tonemob. He did a spot about getting a build from Cindy at Carmine Street.

As a native-born New Yorker, raised in Queens, I felt obligated to check it out in person in my Tonemob track jacket.

I used to work downtown, so one day I made my way to the shop, flashed the Tonemob logo from my track jacket, and said I was a friend of Blake’s.

The folks at Carmine Street were so welcoming, I got a chance to see the build a bit ahead of schedule.

The hand-built quality and the art of his build were so inspiring, that I put my name on her list for one of my own.

That was 2 years ago, fast forward about 8 seasons, and I had forgotten about my name on her list.

My eldest uncle fought and lost his battle with cancer earlier this year.

His last words to me were “… Jon don’t worry, Jesus is here with me. I am very proud of you.”

He was like a dad to me and I wasn’t prepared for doing life without him.

That's when Cindy pings me, saying my build is upcoming and she wanted to reconnect regarding designs.

I put my name on her list 2 years ago, with a different guitar design.

If you know me or have seen my Instagram, all my guitars have the same color scheme, falcon white and gold.

This build was going to be no different, but I took the full weekend to respond…

At that time (earlier this March) I didn’t have a desire or care to finish any guitar, I was still grieving.

After visiting my aunt over the weekend, it hit me like a wave crashing upon the seashore.

Seeing my aunt grieve made me feel so helpless, I felt this urge to do something, anything.

Then on the drive home, I had an Obi-Wan Kenobi moment, with Jesus.

“Use the build to honor your uncle, Jon .”

I cried and then the creativity flooded in.

I was a big fan of the water design from Cindy’s Jimmy Strat so I photoshopped a rough design to Cindy later that week.

Instead of the falcon white gold scheme, I saw a more natural tone.

The top has a shoreline water design because my uncle loved fishing and the sea.

He loved natural wood tones and nature, so the body had no extra paint.

On the binding of the body, I had his name burned into the wood.

He would’ve wanted me to honor my grandparents as well, so I added their names on the binding too (like a tattoo on my guitar).

I also wanted to honor the shop as well, so I opted for the signature drophorn pickguard and the lightning bolt fret.

My uncle had several used inscribed “kote”(armguards) from his kendo days that had our family name on them.

I took one and had it placed in the space above the drophorn.

The fret inlays are made from sea shells, with a large pearl-shaped inlay on the 5th fret.

5th Fret because of our family name, and a pearl because the Good News of Jesus is the pearl of great price (Matthew 13:46; KNJV), that my uncle found before he passed.

The design evolved so organically, I’m grateful for your patience and skill, Cindy.

I pray the Lord blesses you and the shop as much as you have blessed me.

This client wanted a New York music theme designed for his guitar.  He chose iconic places such as the Dakota, CBGB/OMFUG, 96-98 St. Marks(Led Zeppelin's Physical Graffiti album cover), Bowery Ballroom, Knitting Factory, Electric Lady Studios, the Chelsea Hotel and of course the Brooklyn Bridge.
